Travertine?
Travertine is porous and reacts to acids, much like marble. These three habits are the whole routine.
Blot Spills Right Away
Blot, do not wipe. Travertine is porous, and wiping spreads a spill into a larger mark. Lemon, vinegar, and wine need attention fastest.
Use Only Stone Cleaners
Reach for a specially-formulated stone cleaner. Soap and water dulls the surface over time, and acidic or abrasive cleaners etch it.
Remember to Seal as Needed
As often as every six months, and always when the water test fails. Tenax Proseal for counter surfaces, Tenax Hydrex for walls, floors, and anything outdoors.

What is travertine?
Travertine is a natural limestone formed by mineral deposits from hot springs. That formation is what gives it the pitted surface and the warm, earthy coloring.
It sits between marble and limestone in character: softer and more porous than granite, with the same sensitivity to acids that marble has.
Where should travertine be used?
Travertine tiles suit flooring, wall cladding, bathroom surfaces, outdoor patios, and pool coping. It stays cool underfoot, which is exactly what you want in this climate.
We don’t recommend travertine on kitchen counters, because it is softer and more porous than granite and marks more easily under real use.
Should the pits be filled or left open?
Both are legitimate finishes for travertine tiles and it comes down to the look you want. Left unfilled, travertine reads as raw and textured, which suits feature walls and outdoor surfaces.
Filled with resin or grout, the surface becomes smoother and easier to clean, which makes more sense for floors and bathrooms.

Is travertine good for outdoor use?
Yes, and it is one of the better choices. Travertine handles heat well, does not get uncomfortably hot in direct sun, and its texture gives some grip underfoot.
Seal it with Tenax Hydrex for outdoor work, and reseal as often as every six months to keep water and staining out.
