What Is Tenax Hydrex?

A water-repellent sealer for walls, floors and outdoor stone.

Tenax Hydrex is an impregnating water-repellent sealer for natural stone, made by Tenax in Italy. It protects against water and damp rather than oil, which is what makes it the right choice away from the kitchen.

Like Tenax Proseal, it soaks into the pore structure and works from inside the stone rather than forming a film on top. Nothing sits on the surface to peel, wear through or go cloudy.

The difference is what each one is formulated to repel. Hydrex handles water; Proseal handles water and oil. On a wall or a pool deck, oil is not the problem, and Hydrex costs less.

This is the sealer for cladding, flooring, façades, pool surrounds and bathroom walls. For countertops and vanity tops where cooking oil is in play, use Proseal instead.

Which Surfaces Need Hydrex?

Vertical, outdoor, and anywhere water sits.

Floors and wall cladding

Both travertines are the clearest case. Silver Travertine and Beige Travertine are porous throughout and sold for exactly these applications, so Hydrex is the standard treatment.

Pool surrounds and outdoor stone

Granite holds its color outdoors where quartz does not, so a lanai counter or pool deck in Paradiso Light or Marigold is a Hydrex job. Outdoor stone works harder, so test it more often than an indoor floor.

Bathroom walls and onyx features

Onyx is porous and fragile, and we sell it for feature walls rather than counters. Honey Onyx, Mint Onyx and Multicolor Onyx all take Hydrex on a wall.

What does not need it at all

Every engineered quartz, because it is manufactured rather than quarried. Among granites, Absolute Black, Black Galaxy, Tan Brown and Marigold are dense enough to skip sealing entirely. Color does not predict this, so check the specific stone.

How Do You Apply Tenax Hydrex?

Three steps, and vertical surfaces need care.

Start Clean and Bone Dry

A sealer cannot enter a pore that already holds water, which matters more outdoors where stone holds damp. Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner and allow a dry day or two before starting.

Work Bottom to Top on Walls

On vertical surfaces, run from the bottom upward so any runs land on already-treated stone rather than streaking dry cladding below. Keep coats thin and even.

Buff Off Every Trace of Residue

Wipe away all excess with a clean dry cloth before it dries. Residue left on the surface hardens into a hazy film, and on a large floor that is a great deal of area to correct. Ventilate while you work.

Does Hydrex Change How the Stone Looks?

No. Provided you buff off the excess.

No. Hydrex works below the surface and leaves no film, no gloss and no color shift. A correctly sealed wall or floor looks exactly like an unsealed one.

The exception is residue. Sealer left to dry on top rather than buffed away hardens into a patchy haze, and across a large floor that is a lot of surface to strip back. Work in sections with a dry cloth following behind you.

If you want the color deepened rather than left alone, that is a different product. Tenax Cera Fluida enriches tone and adds a soft sheen, and can go on over a sealed surface.

On unfilled travertine, note that Hydrex will not fill the pits. Those are a separate decision made before installation, and sealing neither closes them nor changes how they read.

Does Hydrex Prevent Etching?

No. And on travertine that matters.

No. Sealing stops liquids soaking in. It does nothing to stop acid chemically attacking the surface, and those are two different kinds of damage.

A stain is discoloration from something absorbed. An etch is a dull mark where acid has eaten into the surface itself. Both travertines, every marble and every onyx are calcium carbonate, so all of them etch on contact with acid through a perfectly good seal.

This is why we steer travertine away from kitchen counters. On a floor or a wall it rarely meets vinegar or citrus, so sealing genuinely does cover the everyday risk. In a kitchen it would not.

Granite is silicate rather than calcium carbonate and does not etch. Outdoors, the thing to watch is not acid but the state of the seal, since sun and rain wear it faster than an indoor floor does. Test with a few drops of water and reseal when the stone darkens, which outdoors comes round sooner.

How Often Should You Reseal?

When the water test fails, and outdoors that is sooner.

Test Twice a Year Indoors

Put a few drops of water on an inconspicuous spot and leave them 15 minutes, then wipe. If the stone underneath has darkened, the seal has worn through. If the water beads, it is still working. Marble, travertine and onyx can fail this as often as every six months.

Test Outdoor Stone Twice

Sun, rain and foot traffic wear a seal faster than an indoor floor does. Check pool surrounds and façades at the start and end of the rainy season rather than once a year.

Test Where It Works Hardest

Around a pool edge, at a doorway, or at the base of a wall where rain splashes back. Those areas fail first, and a floor can need attention there while the rest is still fine.

What is the difference between Hydrex and Proseal?

Hydrex repels water, at ₱3,500. Proseal repels water and oil, at ₱4,600. Use Hydrex on walls, floors, cladding and outdoor stone, and Proseal on countertops where cooking oil is the real threat.

Can I use Hydrex on a kitchen countertop?

You can, but it is the wrong tool. It will not stop cooking oil soaking into a porous stone, and oil is what marks a kitchen counter. Spend the extra ₱1,100 on Proseal for anywhere food is prepared.

Does travertine really need sealing?

Yes, and more often than granite. Travertine is porous throughout rather than just at the visible pits, so unsealed it absorbs water, oil and anything colored. Expect to reseal as often as every six months.

Will sealing stop my travertine from etching?

No. Sealing prevents absorption, not chemical attack. Acid will still dull travertine, marble and onyx through a perfect seal, which is why we recommend these materials for floors and walls rather than kitchen counters.

Does engineered quartz need sealing?

Never. Quartz is manufactured, so a sealer leaves a film and achieves nothing. It should also not be used outdoors at all, since UV yellows it permanently.

How do I seal a wall without streaking it?

Work from the bottom upward so runs land on already-treated stone, keep the coats thin, and buff off excess before it dries. Streaks come from residue drying on the surface rather than from the product itself.

Does Hydrex fill the holes in travertine?
