What Is Silver Travertine?

Silver Travertine is a sedimentary stone in silver and pale gray, cut so that its layers show as fine, tightly packed horizontal striations across the face. The effect is linear and textile-like rather than veined.

It is the cool member of our travertine pair. Beige Travertine runs warm in ivory, gold and walnut; this one has no warmth in it at all, which is what makes it the choice for a contemporary gray scheme.

Travertine forms where mineral-rich water emerges at hot springs, depositing calcium carbonate in layers while escaping gas leaves small pits and channels behind. Those voids are characteristic of the material rather than a fault in it.

Because it is calcium carbonate, travertine is a close relative of marble and limestone. That matters for how you clean it, and it is why acid is the thing to keep away from the surface.

Flooring

This is the main use. The fine linear grain gives a large floor a calm, continuous texture, and travertine stays notably cool underfoot, which counts for a lot in the Philippine climate.

Wall cladding and feature walls

The horizontal striations suit a wall better than almost any other stone we carry, because the lines read as deliberate banding across a broad surface.

Pool surrounds and outdoor patios

Travertine handles sun and heat well and does not get uncomfortably hot underfoot. For a pool deck, ask about a textured rather than polished surface for grip.

Bathrooms and vanity areas

It works on bathroom floors and walls. Keep it out of the shower base itself unless it is properly sealed and maintained, since standing water is what travertine likes least.

How Do You Clean Silver Travertine?

Three habits, and acid is the one real enemy.

Keep Acid Away From It

Travertine is calcium carbonate, so vinegar, lemon juice, wine and most bathroom sprays will etch the surface dull on contact. This is the single most important rule with the material.

Use a Stone Cleaner, Not Soap

Soap and water leave a film that builds up and dulls the finish over months. A pH-neutral stone cleaner lifts dirt without attacking the stone or the sealer.

Blot Spills, Do Not Wipe

Wiping spreads a spill across a porous surface and into the pits. Blot it up, then clean the area. Dry the surface afterwards rather than leaving it wet.

How Do You Care for Silver Travertine?

Sealing, and a decision about the holes.

Decide Filled or Unfilled Early

The pits can be left open for a natural, textured look or filled with resin or grout for a smoother surface that is easier to clean. This is decided before installation, not after.

Seal It, Then Keep Sealing It

Travertine is porous and can want sealing as often as every six months. Use Proseal for horizontal surfaces and Hydrex for walls and outdoor areas.

Sweep Before You Mop

Grit dragged across a soft stone under a mop is what dulls a travertine floor over time. Sweep or vacuum first, then mop with a pH-neutral cleaner.

Is Silver Travertine Good for Floors?

Yes, and it is what the stone is for.

Yes. This is travertine’s strongest application, and the reason we carry it. The fine linear grain gives a large floor a continuous, calm texture that tile struggles to match, and it stays cool underfoot in a way that suits the Philippine climate.

Plan the direction before installation. The striations all run one way, so a floor laid with the lines running the length of a room reads longer, and one laid across reads wider. Mixed orientation looks like a mistake.

Be realistic about maintenance. This is a soft, porous stone that etches on contact with acid, so it belongs in living areas, bedrooms, hallways and around pools rather than in a kitchen where vinegar and citrus get spilled.

For a high-traffic commercial floor, or anywhere the cleaning will be done with whatever is under the sink, Gray Honda granite gives a similar cool gray at a fraction of the upkeep.

Does Silver Travertine Need Sealing?

Yes, and more often than granite does.

Yes. Travertine is porous throughout, not just at the visible pits, so unsealed it will absorb water, oil and anything colored that sits on it. Sealing is not optional with this material.

Reseal when the stone asks for it. Put a few drops of water on an inconspicuous part of the counter and leave them fifteen minutes, wipe it away, then look underneath: if the stone has darkened where the water sat, it is time. On travertine that can come round as often as every six months, far more often than the granites we carry. Use Proseal for floors and horizontal surfaces, and Hydrex for walls and outdoor areas.

Sealing protects against staining but not against etching. Acid will still dull the surface even on a well-sealed floor, which is why keeping vinegar and citrus away matters more than sealing does.

Porcelain printed to look like travertine needs no sealing and never etches. It also repeats every few tiles and has no depth to the surface, which is exactly what you are paying for with real stone.

What are the holes in travertine?

They are gas voids left behind as the stone formed at hot springs, where escaping bubbles moved through the depositing calcium carbonate. They are characteristic of the material rather than a defect, and they can be left open or filled before installation.

Should you buy filled or unfilled Silver Travertine?

Filled is easier to live with on a floor, because there is nowhere for dirt to collect and mopping is straightforward. Unfilled keeps more of the natural texture and suits walls and outdoor areas. Decide before installation, since it is not a change you make later.

Does Silver Travertine etch?

Yes. It is calcium carbonate, so vinegar, lemon juice, wine and many household cleaners will dull the surface where they touch it. Sealing does not prevent this. Keeping acid off the stone is the only real protection.

Is Silver Travertine slippery around a pool?

Less so than most stone, particularly in an unfilled or textured surface where the pits give grip. Ask the branch about a textured rather than polished finish for a pool deck, since polished stone underfoot near water is the combination to avoid.

Which way should the striations run?

Along the length of a room makes it read longer; across makes it read wider. Either is legitimate, but every piece has to agree, so settle it at quotation stage. Mixed orientation reads as a mistake rather than a design choice.

How is it different from Beige Travertine?

Only in color and grain. Silver Travertine is cool gray with fine, tightly packed horizontal striations. Beige Travertine is warm ivory, gold and walnut with broader banding. Same material, same price, same care.

Can travertine be used for kitchen countertops?

No. We do not recommend it. It is soft, porous and etches on contact with the citrus and vinegar that live in a kitchen, so a counter will mark within months. For countertops, granite or engineered quartz is the right answer and travertine is best kept to floors, walls and pool surrounds.
