What You Should Know About Jet Black Granite

What Is Jet Black Granite?

A trade name for Mongolian Black, and the reason we do not stock it.

Ask for Jet Black granite in the Philippines and what you are being offered is Mongolian Black. That is the stone’s real name, and it is quarried in Inner Mongolia in northern China.

It is dense with minimal visible pattern, delivering the solid blackness most people picture when they imagine a black countertop. Like most commercial black granites it sits closer to gabbro than to true granite in strict geological terms, though it behaves like granite in every way that affects a kitchen.

Untreated, it is a decent material. The problem is that a great deal of it is not untreated, and nothing on the paperwork will tell you which is which.

Why Does the Color Vary So Much?

Color depth varies naturally between slabs. The best material is genuinely dark throughout, while a significant proportion carries gray patches or uneven tone.

That variation is the root of the problem. Uneven slabs sell at a lower grade, which creates the incentive described below.

There Is Also an Indian Jet Black

A separate Indian stone is traded under the same name, and it is a different material entirely. The shared name means a quotation saying Jet Black tells you nothing about which stone is arriving.

Ask for the quarry region rather than the trade name. Mongolian Black and the Indian stone behave differently and are priced differently.

Why Is Mongolian Black Granite Dyed?

Because dye is cheaper than accepting a lower grade.

Slabs with uneven color would sell at a discount, so some suppliers dye or oil the surface instead. The treated slab looks premium in the yard, photographs beautifully and passes casual inspection without difficulty.

The treatment does not last. Within a few years a dyed counter develops patchy gray areas where the color has worn away, most visibly around the sink and along the front edge where cleaning is most frequent.

The damage cannot be repaired. Repolishing removes more of the treated layer and makes the patching worse rather than better.

Why Stone Depot Does Not Carry It

The honest answer is that we cannot guarantee what arrives. Dyeing is not detectable by sight, the paperwork can say anything, and verifying a container would mean testing every slab individually.

For a stone whose failure surfaces two or three years after installation, in a customer’s kitchen, that is not a risk worth taking on their behalf. We would rather sell a stone we can stand behind than a cheaper one we cannot.

How Much Does Jet Black Granite Cost in the Philippines?

Cheaper than the alternatives, and that is the problem.

Jet Black typically undercuts Absolute Black by a noticeable margin, which is the entire reason buyers ask for it by name. Stone Depot does not quote it, because we do not stock it.

The saving is real when the slab is untreated. The difficulty is that the cheapest material in any yard is the material with the most uneven color, and uneven color is exactly what dye is used to hide.

Treat an unusually low quote on black granite as information rather than an opportunity. A supplier confident in their material will let you test it on the spot.

What the Alternatives Cost

Absolute Black and Black Galaxy both run ₱4,700 per square meter here, with Shanxi Black at ₱5,500. Fabrication and installation each start at ₱500 per linear meter, and cut-outs at ₱500 per set.

Against a counter that will sit in your kitchen for twenty years, the gap between Jet Black and Absolute Black is small. Against the cost of replacing a patched counter after three, it is negligible.

Where Is Jet Black Granite Used?

Jet Black turns up in the same places as any other black granite, which is part of why the dyeing problem matters so much. Stone Depot does not stock it, so this is what buyers use it for elsewhere.

How Do You Test Black Granite for Dye?

Wet a White Cloth

Put a small amount of acetone on a clean white cloth. Acetone-based nail polish remover works if you do not have pure acetone, but the gentler acetone-free formulations will not.

Wipe an Inconspicuous Area

Choose a cut edge or an area that will sit under an appliance. A firm wipe is enough, and you are not trying to scrub the surface.

Inspect the Cloth

Any color transfer means the slab has been treated. Undyed granite leaves the cloth clean, because its color runs through the body of the stone rather than sitting on top of it.

Any reputable supplier will let you run this on request. Reluctance tells you what you need to know, and a price noticeably below market on black granite is worth treating as a warning rather than a bargain.

Should You Buy Jet Black Granite?

Not without testing it first.

No. Not unless you have run the acetone test yourself and watched the cloth come away clean.

The stone is not bad material when it is untreated. The difficulty is that the treated and untreated slabs are indistinguishable at the point of sale, and the consequence only appears years later when the color starts patching around the sink.

If a supplier will let you test the actual slab you are buying, and it passes, you are getting a competent dark granite at a competitive price. If they will not, walk away.

For most buyers the simpler answer is to choose a stone where the problem does not arise at all.

What Are the Small Pits in Mongolian Black Granite?

A characteristic of the stone, not a manufacturing fault.

Mongolian Black naturally contains pinholes, tiny surface pits formed as gas escaped while the rock cooled. They occur in the stone itself rather than being introduced during processing.

Most slabs are resin-filled during fabrication to give a smoother surface. This is standard practice across dark granites and does not weaken the material, though some pits stay visible under raking light.

Both Absolute Black and Shanxi Black carry noticeably fewer of them, which is part of what the higher price buys.

How Do You Care for a Black Granite Countertop?

Three habits, whichever black stone you end up with.

Skip the Sealer

Dense black granites do not need one, and applying it leaves a hazy film that dulls the polish you paid for. This applies to Absolute Black, Black Galaxy and Shanxi Black alike.

Use Only Granite Cleaner

Dish soap builds up over repeated use and leaves a haze that gradually dulls the finish. Avoid abrasive powders, bleach and anything acidic such as vinegar or calamansi.

Always Keep the Surface Dry

Standing water is what leaves spots on a dark polish, and drying the surface fully eliminates them. For hard water deposits around a faucet, a razor blade held flat lifts them without scratching.

What Colors Go With a Black Granite Countertop?

The guidance is the same across every solid black stone.

White cabinetry is the classic pairing and remains the strongest. The contrast is crisp and graphic, and it suits both modern minimalism and traditional Filipino kitchens with shaker-style doors.

For warmth, mid-tone timber works well, particularly oak and walnut. Gray cabinetry in lighter tones gives a softer, more contemporary result.

Fixtures are flexible. Chrome and stainless give a clean modern look, where brass and bronze warm the scheme considerably.

Keep the backsplash plain. A solid black counter already carries enough visual weight without a patterned tile competing against it.

Is Jet Black granite the same as Mongolian Black?

Is there an Indian Jet Black granite?

The Indian material and the Mongolian material differ in density, pinhole count and price. Confirm which one a supplier means before comparing their figure to anyone else’s.

What is the difference between Jet Black and Black Galaxy?
Jet Black aims for solid, unbroken black. Black Galaxy is a dense Indian granite scattered with bronze flecks that catch the light and shift with your viewing angle.

They also differ in reliability. Black Galaxy comes from a single quarry region with consistent grading, where Mongolian Black varies enough that some of it gets dyed to hide the variation.

What are the main types of black granite?
Four turn up regularly in the Philippines. Absolute Black from India is uniform and solid, Black Galaxy adds bronze flecking, Shanxi Black from China is the deepest black available, and Mongolian Black is the budget option sold as Jet Black.

The first three are dense enough to skip sealing entirely. The practical difference between them is appearance and pinhole count rather than performance.

Does black granite need sealing?
No, not the dense ones. Absolute Black, Black Galaxy and Shanxi Black are all tight enough that liquids cannot penetrate under normal kitchen conditions.

Sealing them anyway is counterproductive, because the product has nowhere to soak into and dries to a hazy film on the polish.

Can black granite be used for stairs and outdoors?
Yes. Granite is UV-stable, so it will not yellow or fade in Philippine sun, which makes it suitable for stair treads, lanais and pool surrounds where engineered quartz would discolor.

Choose a leathered or flamed surface for anything underfoot. A polished face becomes slippery when wet, and the texture also hides the scuffing that stair nosings collect.

Is Jet Black granite cheaper than Absolute Black?
Usually, and that gap is the whole appeal. It is also the reason the dyeing happens, because the cheapest slabs are the ones with the most uneven color to hide.

A price noticeably below the market for black granite is worth treating as a warning rather than a bargain. Run the acetone test before you decide the saving is real.
